Distinguished guests and friends get together to celebrate the grand opening ceremony of SWCAC

On December 1st, 2017, the grand opening ceremony of Design Society|Sea World Culture & Arts Center (SWCAC) was held at Shekou, Shenzhen. Lord Ashton, Member of the British House of Lords, Mr. Sun Chengming, Board Member of CMG and Chairman of CMSK, Mr. Fumihiko Maki, architect and designer of SWCAC and other guests all witnessed this splendid cultural event.

Built by CMSK in seven years, SWCAC is a new cultural hub for various public programmes and specializes in creating a unique cultural experience for the public. It has attracted high-level interest of the media at home and abroad. At the opening ceremony, a number of distinguished guests from different countries and regions, such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Japan, all witnessed the grand opening ceremony of this project together with representatives from diplomacy, art, architecture, fashion and business.

At the opening ceremony, Mr. Han Wangxi, Vice Chairman of Shenzhen International Communication Association and Director of Promotion Office, Shenzhen City of Design, was invited to give a welcoming speech and expressed his congratulation and high expectation on Shenzhen as a city of design and an international metropolis. Design Society’s partner, Mr. Tim Reeve, Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer at Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), reviewed the history of V&A and the origin of the partnership between CMSK and V&A, and extolled the great significance of Design Society. Mr. Xu Yongjun, Director and General Manager of CMSK delivered a speech to extend heart-felt thanks to the attendees. He said, “CMSK will strive to build Design Society into a cultural landmark to add a more complex, diversified and international humanistic connotation to Shenzhen. We will promote the interconnectivity among cultures, business and industries, and accelerate the development of creative industry and design”.

In the grand and warm atmosphere, Lord Ashton, Member of the British House of Lords and Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), Mr. Li Xiaogan, Member of the Standing Committee of Shenzhen Municipal Committee and Minister of Publicity Department of ShenZhen Municipal Committee, Mr. Sun Chengming, Director of CMG and Chairman of CMSK, Mr. Fan Di’an, President of China Central Academy of Fine Arts and Vice Chairman of Chinese Artists Association, Mr. Fumihiko Maki, architect and designer of SWCAC, Ms. Karen Maddocks, Consul General of British Consulate-General Guangzhou, Mr. Liu Wei, Executive Vice General Manager of CMSK, Mr. Liao Zibin, Member of Nanshan District Standing Committee of Shenzhen, Sir John Sorrell, Chairman of London Design Festival and a trustee of of V&A, Mr. Zhang Lin, Vice General Manager of CMSK, and Mr. Ole Bouman, Director of Design Society, etc. attended the opening ceremony.

After the ceremony, Mr. Ole Bouman, showed the guests and attendees around the building and the Main Gallery of the Design Society, the V&A Gallery and the 52-Year Architecture Retrospective Exhibition of Fumihiko Maki.

As one of the achievements of China-British cultural exchange and the first cultural and art project of CMG in 145 years, the successful opening of SWCAC has attracted wide attention from home and abroad. In the future, the center is bound to add new cultural charm to Shenzhen as a city of design, and become a new cultural landmark of Shekou.

Guests participating in the opening ceremony also included Mr. Di Qian, Chief Administrative Officer of CMSK, Mr. Nick Marchand, Director Arts, China and North-East Asia at British Council, Mr. Ralph Rogers, South China Area Director of British Council, and Mr. Yu Ding, Dean of the School of Art Management and Education of China Central Academy of Fine Arts.

SWCAC is the first project undertaken by Fumihiko Maki and Associates in China. The project covers a land area of more than 26,000 m2 with a total area of 71,000 m2. The center comprises exhibition halls and theatres,like the V&A Gallery, coastal multi-functional press release rooms, Shenzhen Guanfu Museum, and a series of business and dining spaces. The major part of the building opens up horizons to the surrounding mountain, sea and city, raising visitors’ interest in cultural dialogues and people-to-people communication.

The inaugural exhibition for the Main Gallery of Design Society, Minding the Digital, is designed by the renowned architectural studio MVRDV. The exhibition collects 50 groups of cross-border works from domestic experienced and emerging artists, designers and creative practitioners, bringing visitors an immersive experience with miraculous designs based on digital technology. The exhibition is divided into three sections and progressively demonstrates opportunities and challenges brought by digital designs.

Values of Design, the inaugural site-specific exhibition co-presented by the Design Society and V&A at the V&A Gallery, is designed by Sam Jacob Studio. Nearly 300 exhibits from 900 A.D. to the present widely explore the relationship between “value” and “design” and inspire people to discuss the values of design and how the values in turn influence design.

In the meantime, the exhibition Nurturing Dreams in Recent Work: Fumihiko Maki + Maki and Associates is being held at the Park View Gallery, which shows to visitors the structures and ideas behind the architecture. The exhibition not only focuses on the basis concepts of Fumihiko Maki’s works, but also demonstrates his practical experience over past 60 years.
